Overcast can be installed/configured to use different connection types to your backend system. This doesn't change the functionality of Overcast itself but rather depends on your company's specific requirements and standards. There are four basic installation guides which describe the different ways of setting up Overcast.
You will need to choose an installation guide that is supported based on whether your backend system is publicly accessible, or if your backend system is behind a firewall.
If you are using a publicly accessible backend system, you may choose to connect directly to your backend system with Overcast. Click here for more information on connecting directly.
If you are using SAP and have a publicly accessible SAProuter in place, you may choose to connect with SAProuter. Click here for setting up the connection via SAProuter.
Using the VPN is recommended due to a variety of reasons. This is the default, robust, high-performance connectivity option for production systems. It provides faster performance for real-time calls, and does not require data redundancy. It is Azure VPN and offers a solution without the need to install any additional software. More importantly, it is accessible for Vigience's highly available (HA) servers. It also provides an additional security layer as Vigience needs to white-list your connection to the server. However, this requires contacting Vigience directly for the support in setting up the VPN, and thus may require some more time for the setup. VPN accepts all connectors. Click here for setting up the connection via VPN.
Secure Agent is a lightweight Windows service that establishes a secure tunnel to your backend system behind the firewall. Using the Secure Agent has the advantages of not requiring you to open up any ports in the firewall and it is very fast to set up. It offers an ideal solution for complex company networks where setting up a VPN connection can be both time consuming and costly. The Secure Agent is also available for self service connectivity, which is ideal for getting started quickly. On the other hand, the Secure Agent is not accessible for Vigience's HA servers. The Secure Agent needs to be installed on a separate machine (that typically sits in the DMZ) within your network and only certain connectors are supported. The supported connectors for Secure Agent are SAP, MS SqlServer, CSV and SAP HANA. This option is recommended for trial users. Click here for setting up the connection via Secure Agent.
In order to provide a better understanding of how the different installation options differ, see the following flowchart. It is meant as advanced information for users who want to compare the installation options with more detail. The installed Overcast software is always the same with the only difference being that the backend system gets connected by a different network technology.
